I Am
a poem by Katey
I am lost in my dreams
I wonder about my future, my past, my present
I hear the sound of page flips and pencils scraping paper
I want peace, but can’t seem to find it
I love my life, no matter how messed up it seems to be
I am curious, only human, but a little bit more
I pretend to fly with imaginary wings
I feel a smile on my face, a laugh coming on
I touch only the surface of reality
I worry that I will not live life to its fullest
I cry too little and smile too big
I am more than you see
I understand myself, I feel like the only one
I speak my thoughts, I speak my beliefs
I dream of the unachievable, but strive to achieve it
I try to have fun on the darkest of days
I am what I am, and that’s all I’ll ever be
How she wrote it:
In sixth grade, my favorite teacher
gave us the assignment "I am poem." She read off half of a sentence
each time and told us to fill in the blanks. The half sentences were "I
am," "I feel," etc. I love to sing and writing poems is not that
different from writing songs. To this day, this poem is my favorite I
have ever made.
