As a writer, you’re supposed to have a superior imagination, right? After all, writers dream up interesting characters and put them into amazing made-up stories.
Or do they?
Writers don’t always make up everything they write. It’s completely common - and perfectly acceptable – to use stories that really happened in a work you call fiction. And that’s our contest for this season! Here are the rules.
1. The contest is open to students in grades 5 through 9.
2. Write a short story (up to 500 words) based on a real
life event, which may have happened to you, someone you
know, or someone you don’t know.
3. As you write, don’t worry too much about getting the
facts straight. Instead, focus on writing the best
story you can, based on that event. If that means
making changes to real-life characters and plot, so be
it.
4. Make sure your story has a beginning, a middle, and a
satisfying end.
5. Entries are due by February 15, 2013.
6. Paste your story in an email (no attachments, please)
with Fall Writing Contest in the subject line. Send to
heather@writeinthemiddle.co along with your name,grade,
school, and teacher's name.
